Being a good producer can encompass many things, but they all need something that differentiates them from the others. Something to make them different from the others, whether its bringing a different feel to the game, or completely flipping it on its head. There are many great producers in this world, such as J Dilla, Nujabes, Dr Dre, and even Kanye west. They all brought totally different things to the rap and hip hop scene. J Dilla Brought a distinct change to the hip hop scene. At the time, hip hop was usually a strict, simple beat of a 4 loop pattern. J Dilla turned that into a 5 loop, a 7 and 11 loop pattern. This added more depth and honesty into his work; allowing him to add the subtle nuances, which made every listen different from the last. Nujabes, one of my most favorite producers, was a producer that infused jazz beats into hip hop tunes, this made an amazing laid back tone that was known for its orchestral and relaxing feeling. These two had things that set them apart form the rest of the producers. I feel like to be a good producer, you need to be a good musician first, to be able to write and rewrite a piece, to be able to incorporate any sound, to make it sound like a symphony of sounds, all working together to create a truly beautiful sound that completely captivates your senses. The producer needs to make the listener and artist feel comfortable, to let them ease into the song, to really listen to the song, not just hear it. The producer needs to understand what type of beat and lyrics that the artist known for, and make something that fits their persona. Another big part of being a good producer is to actually enjoy what your making, enjoying the finished product. You can't expect others to enjoy it if you don't. Above all else, you need to shape your own path, not following and copying another producers style. You need to be innovative and creative, not another J Dilla or Dr Dre. To be a good producer, you need to be yourself, to be different, to be able to understand the beat your making, to be able to rewrite it over and over again, improving it slowly until you love what you created. That's what it means to be a good producer. | |
